How to Lay Your Edges Without Flakes, Mess or Fingers
Share
Laid edges finish a look, but the usual routine is messy: gel on your fingers, a toothbrush that's seen better days, and flakes showing up by lunchtime. Here's how to get clean, laid edges, plus the tricks that keep them that way.
What you need
- Edge control in the hold you want
- A soft brush to smooth
- A fine-tooth comb to define
- A pick for lifting and detailing
- A silk scarf or edge wrap
Or use one tool that has all three built in. The Touch That Up Girl Edge Control Wand has a brush, comb and pick on the applicator, and you squeeze to feed edge control straight to it. No fingers, no separate tools, no jar to dip into.
Step 1: Start with your style done
Do your edges last, after your hair is styled and your ponytail, bun or braids are in. Edges should be clean and dry or just slightly damp.
Step 2: Apply a small amount
Less is more. Too much product is what causes flaking and that stiff, shiny look. Squeeze a little onto the applicator and work in small sections.
Step 3: Smooth with the brush
Brush along your hairline in the direction you want your edges to lay. Use gentle pressure. Your edges are the most fragile hair on your head, so smooth them, don't scrub them.
Step 4: Define and swoop with the comb
Use the fine teeth to lay baby hairs into shapes: waves, swoops or straight-back sleek. Press each section down lightly as you go.
Step 5: Detail with the pick
Use the pick end to lift, separate and fine-tune individual pieces until the shape is right.
Step 6: Tie them down to set
Wrap a silk scarf or edge wrap around your hairline for 5 to 10 minutes while the product sets. This is the step most people skip, and it's the one that makes edges last all day.
How to keep edges laid all day
- Pick the right hold for the day. Light hold for a soft everyday look, stronger hold for heat, humidity, workouts or a long night out. Which hold do I need? →
- Don't over-apply. Thin layers hold better and don't flake.
- Sleep in a satin scarf or bonnet. Your edges will still be smooth in the morning with a quick touch-up.
- Keep a wand in your bag for midday touch-ups.
Be gentle with your edges
Tight styles and rough brushing can stress your hairline over time. Don't pull edges too tight, brush gently, and give your hairline a break between tight styles.
